Convention on Colorants 2013

The 5th edition of International Convention on Colorants -2013 (COC 13) was organized by the Dyestuffs Manufacturers Association of India (DMAI) jointly with Dyestuff Technology Department, the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) Mumbai, with the support of Dept. of Chemicals & Petrochemicals, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Govt. of India and iNDEXTb (A Govt. of Gujarat Organisation) on 8th & 9th January 2013 at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar, Gujarat.  The Gujarat Dyestuff Manufacturers Association (GDMA) was the Co-organiser for the Convention.

The inaugural function started with the traditional lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries.  Shri Ram Ajekar, Immediate Past President, DMAI compeered the inaugural proceedings.

In his welcome address, Shri Janak Mehta, Mentor & Chairman, COC 13 and President, DMAI mentioned that the 5th edition of COC 13 was being held in Gujarat, the hub of Colorants industry, as decided during COC11, and committed during Interdye Asia 2011 Exhibition in Ahmedabad.  While referring to the genesis of COCs, Shri Mehta stated that these Conventions have contributed to generating ideas and planting the seeds of thinking emanating from the research work of eminent scientists from all over the world. He emphasised the imperative need for innovation to improve productivity and remaining committed to protect the environment.  He expressed hope that the presentations during the next 2 days by experts from the colorants industry would be very relevant and useful to the participants.

Shri Mehta thanked Shri Saurabhbhai Patel, Hon. Minister of Energy and Petrochemicals, Mines and Minerals of Gujarat, who had accepted our invitation within a very short notice to be the Guest of Honour, as Hon.Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi could not attend the Convention due to his other pressing engagements with the Vibrant Gujarat 2013 being held concurrently. Shri Mehta also acknowledged the support and co-operation extended by Shri M.Sahu, Principal Secretary, Industries and Mines Department, Govt. of Gujarat and Shri Kirtan Vyas, Advisor (IB), Industrial Extension Bureau (iNDEXTb) and their dedicated team for organising this mega event.  He thanked the Dept. of Chemcials & Petrochemicals, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Govt. of India for their support. Shri Mehta was sanguine that with their support, the industry would be able to capture 30% of the global market share, as against the present 15%, as projected in DMAI Action Plan for 2011-2020.

Shri Saurabhbhai Patel, in his address, thanked the organizers for inviting him to be the Guest of Honour.   He complemented DMAI for conducting the Convention in Gandhinagar coinciding with the Vibrant Gujarat, held biennially since 2003 and going from strength to strength.   He declared that the manufacturing sector has alone contributed nearly 32% of GDP of the State.  Acknowledging its vital role, the Govt. has created a chemical zone in Dahej, which is one of the top 25 chemical zones in the world, with all infrastructural facilities.

Recognising the significant presence of Colorants industry in Gujarat, Shri Patel assured that the Govt. of Gujarat would extend all possible support for its growth with its policy of setting up of private industrial parks, particularly for the chemical industry with the required infrastructure.  The textile policy will give a fillip to processing industry, which would in turn act as a catalyst to the growth of Colorants industry.   He stressed the need for the industry to go in for a change of its image and employ sustainable production processes to give a cleaner and better environment with proper and effective effluent treatment and disposal of waste.  He welcomed investments in chemical sector in the state and stressed on the Govt. resolve to forge partnerships with industry and its Associations to address the pollution concerns.

Prof. V.R. Kanetkar, Ex. Emeritus Professor, ICT, Mumbai and Mentor, COC, made forceful emphasis on the perennial need for adoption of innovations in the Colorants industry at all levels with particular reference to clean environment for its sustainable growth.   He emphasised on the inter-disciplinary research in the Colorants industry, which will go a long way in maintaining its sustainability in future.

In the Plenary Session that followed, Prof.Bhate, Co-Chairman, COC -13, in his brief address, stated that care has been taken by the organizers to include topics on focused areas to make industry more vibrant and eco-friendly.  It will ensure that colours are to stay and not fade away.

While delivering the Keynote address, Dr.Pushpito Ghosh, Director, Central Salt & Marine Chemicals Research Institute, Bhavnagar traced various facets of the Colorants industry from the very discovery of indigo, to the latest innovations in the usage of solar energy cells and electronics.  Since many Colorants units are located in Gujarat under SME sector, who cannot afford large investments in R&D individually, he advocated the setting up of a dedicated institute for Colorants research and development on a co-operative model, which would go a long way in its growth in the days to come.  He spoke about the need for optimum use of natural resources which are scarce through innovation. Salt, which is a problem in pollution treatment, can be converted into Acid & Alkali. Every R&D work has to address the requirements of customers. He further stated that there are unlimited possibilities in the area of “use of Colorants.”

Shri Jitendra Patel, Convention Secretary proposed a vote of thanks.

In the technical sessions that followed for the next 2 days, many reputed and distinguished speakers from both India and abroad made extensive and informative presentations on the latest technical innovations and upgradations in the Colorants field all over the globe.  Presentations on innovations in effluent treatments were well received and appreciated. The topics on which various presentations were made were of high relevance to the Colorants industry and were found very useful by the audience.   A novel feature in this edition of COC 13 was the Poster Exhibition, wherein 20 interesting posters on various innovations by the research students of Department of Dyestuff Technology, Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai and Department of Chemistry, Sardar Patel University, Vallabh Vidyanagar were presented.

In the lively Panel Discussion on the concluding day on “Leveraging India Advantage for the Growth of the Colorant Industry”, chaired by Dr. S.K.Nanda, Addl.Chief Secretary, Home Dept. Gujarat State, eminent Panelists viz.  Prof. V.R. Kanetkar, Dr.Surendra Kulkarni and Mr.Ajay Kanwar made elaborate and eloquent submissions, which were of great relevance to the growth of the Colorants industry in our country in the coming days.

COC13, which was well appreciated by the participants, concluded with a vote of thanks and felicitations by Shri Virendra Widge, Convener, Publicity & Publication Committee.
